About dissemination

Dissemination of technical know-how through structured training programs/workshops that focus on hands-on sessions with the objective of creating awareness of traditional building techniques among students (architecture and engineering colleges), practicing professionals, building artisans, or anyone who sees value in building with traditional and environmentally sensitive materials.

Training Programs

Sankalan conducts customized training programs / workshops for group of students, professionals, school students and building artisans for longer duration spanning from a day, week, fortnight to a month.

In the past Sankalan has conducted training programs for artisans belonging to tribal regions in collaboration with architects and local governments with the purpose to transfer complete know-how of a particular construction technique so that this learned skill becomes their livelihood and they work as catalysts in building habitats in the tribal setup. These training programs are dearer to the training team of Sankalan, since it provides an opportunity to help/assist people who are willing to learn the skill for a livelihood.

Sankalan also conducts Introductory training programs of 1 to 12 days for the following building techniques:

  • Earthen Construction Techniques
  • Masonry Arches Domes and Vaults
  • Lime-Based Construction
  • Flooring and Finishes
  • Carpentry

More construction techniques will be added to the list of training programs/workshops.

CSEB Production Training Program for local artisans in collaboration with Tribal Integrated Development and Education Trust, Bihar
  • Established a dedicated production center with the purpose of producing CSEB.
  • Organized a training program spanning one month for a group of 20-25 villagers, centered around the manufacturing of Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks (CSEB).
  • Upon completion of the training program, the newly acquired skills and environmentally-friendly materials will be utilized in the construction of a school designed by Ess Team Architects, catering to the educational needs of around 2000 students.

Masonry Techniques Training Program for local artisans in collaboration with Bandhan, Madhya Pradesh, 2022
  • Artisans have been imparted training to enhance their skills in exposed masonry techniques.
  • The skilled artisans will apply their newly acquired expertise in the construction of three villages as part of the Adarsh Gram scheme.

Training Program for architecture students of CEPT University, Bhuj-Kutch, Gujarat, 2022
  • Since last two year Sankalan is conducting a four-day training program for over 200 students enrolled in Foundation Course CEPT University.
  • This training program focuses on load bearing building components like masonry foundation & plinth, stabilized & unstabilized earthen walling systems along with masonry arches, vaults and domes.

Making of CSEB and its Masonry Training Program for local artisans in collaboration with Neev Designs for Jilla Gramin Vikas Yantrana Department, Maharashtra, 2021
  • Conducted a two-week training program for 20 villagers, focusing on the production of Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks (CSEB).
  • Established a production center dedicated to manufacturing of CSEB.
  • After the training, the use of environmentally-friendly materials will be incorporated into construction projects initiated by the Jilla Gramin Vikas Yantrana.

CSEB Production Training Program for local artisans in collaboration with Unnati, Bhachau, Gujarat, 2006
  • In the village of Junavada, located in Bhachau-Kutch, a training program was initiated with the aim of constructing 100 houses that would be built by the villagers themselves.
  • Previously, the residents of Junavada were employed as laborers in a brick manufacturing factory. However, instead of continuing to work for a manufacturing factory, they were provided training to produce environmentally-friendly Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks (CSEB) independently.
  • Additionally, they received training in masonry skills, enabling them to become self-sufficient in building their own houses.

CSEB Production Training Program for local artisans in collaboration with Uplink, Indonesia for post Tsunami Rehabilitation Program, 2004
  • Following the devastating Tsunami, the task of rebuilding 2600 homes in 23 affected villages commenced. As part of a social initiative to provide employment opportunities for retired militants, a training program was designed to equip them with the necessary skills to build homes. This program aimed to contribute to their reintegration into society.
  • Despite the challenges faced, our team persevered and successfully trained a total of 40 teams, consisting of approximately 400 individuals, over the course of one year. This support program was implemented to establish a CSEB production center, providing a sustainable solution for future construction endeavors. -A group of trained participants successfully constructed 100 houses utilizing locally available soil to produce Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks (CSEB).
