Hence, treating wastewater at the micro level is the need of the hour. Various technologies are available to treat wastewater at both micro and macro levels. DEWATS is a technology, which can be implemented for a single house, housing colony, or village/city level.

Decentralized Waste Water Treatment System (DEWATS) is a nature-based technology to treat wastewater without using centralized components/machinery for its functioning. DEWATS being a decentralized approach to treating waste water, its components can be installed near the source of wastewater generation without disturbing the surrounding aesthetics. The system functions using natural bacteria, plants, and gravity with minimal use of electricity thus eliminating the use of deadly chemicals and huge infrastructure for its functioning. The treated water can be used for gardening, toilet flushing, irrigating farms, etc.
