Penha de Franca Church at Britona

Material / Technique • Lime masonry & plaster

The Church – “Penha de Franca” situated in Britona, Goa, an ancient religious structure built by the Portuguese. This architectural marvel is 450 year old. It is one of the very few churches that are located directly along a water body.

Father Alan, a priest, closely worked with the architect Mr. Buland Shukla (Heritage Acoustics) on restoration projects of churches in and around Goa including this church.

In this church thick load bearing walls were made with laterite stone and mud mortar. Wall was plastered and maintained with traditional reciepe of lime plaster which was made with local shell lime, sand, shell gravels, mud and three different organic stabiliser and had been applied in 4-5 layers. Same design mix was derived with chemical analysis by Dr. Father Alan and all the exterior and interior walls of the church were restored with lime plaster by artisans of So Hath-100 Hands under guidance of Sankalan Team.
